6 Steps to Steamed Broccoli Without a Steamer

I LOVE Broccoli. Not only does it taste incredible, this cruciferous vegetable provides a wealth of phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. When crushed with the teeth, it releases Diindolylmethane (DIM) and may help rebalance abnormal estrogen levels by reducing the amount of c16 and c4 (bad estrogens) and increasing c2 (good estrogens). Some studies show that an increase and decrease of the above mentioned elements play key rolls in lowering risk of breast and prostate cancer! It helps to clear out dead cell parts (free radicals) from our blood streams (detoxify) that get there through things like poor nutrition, polluted water sources and use of non-stick pans  In short, broccoli is a super-food.

That is, until we drain, kill and mutate the good stuff by microwaving, stir-frying or boiling it! We can kill up to 90% of the nutrients using these methods.

Steaming your broccoli takes just 5 to 10 minutes and will help you squeeze the most out of your tiny green trees.

Materials Needed:

  • Pot
  • Strainer
  • Scissors
  • Broccoli
  • Celtic Sea Salt

Step 1: Put water in a pot

Three to four inches in the bottom of a pot will do.

Step 2: Bring your water to a boil

Put that stove on high and watch the magic happen.

Step 3: Cut the Trees off of the Stem

I like to use scissors for this part. it’s faster than using a knife and I can get my chunks exactly the way I want them.

Step 4: Put Your Trees in to a Colander

Try to find a colander that fits down inside your pot without touching the water.

Step 5: Start the Steaming Process

Put the colander on the pan. the colander I used in this picture is a little too big for the pot but it still worked fantastically.

Step 6: Cover your Broccoli and Steam for 5 to 10 minutes

Covering your broccoli will trap the steam inside and allow it to cook. Watch for it to turn a bright shade of green and pull a stem out when you think it may be ready.

Salt it with some celtic sea salt and you’re ready to eat delicious broccoli that has retained most of its nutritional value and is cooked to perfection. Enjoy!
